What to Expect in a TMJ Massage Session
Every session includes a combination of techniques such as:
Neck and upper back release to ease postural tension and support jaw alignment.
Facial and scalp massage to relieve tension in the temporalis and masseter, reduce headaches, and calm the nervous system.
Gentle intraoral massage (with gloves) to access the medial and lateral pterygoids - often the root of jaw pain.
Targeted work around the hyoid, throat, and SCM muscles to improve swallowing, breathing, and jaw mechanics.
Each treatment is tailored to your comfort level. You’ll be fully informed and in control throughout.
Understanding TMJ Anatomy
Your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your jaw to your skull, just in front of each ear. When the joint becomes tight, misaligned, or overworked, it can cause radiating pain in the jaw, head, neck, and upper back.
Several key muscles contribute to TMJ discomfort, including:
Masseter: Located at the side of your jaw, one of the strongest muscles in the body.
Temporalis: Fan-shaped muscle along the temples.
Medial & Lateral Pterygoids: Deep jaw muscles responsible for much of the internal clenching and tension patterns.

FAQs About TMJ Massage
-
Yes, intraoral massage is safe when performed by a trained massage therapist. It is a gentle, effective technique done only with your consent. Many clients feel deep jaw and facial relief afterward, helping release tension they didn’t realize they were holding.
-
Intraoral massage feels like gentle, focused pressure inside your mouth along the jaw and cheek muscles. You may feel tenderness where tension is held, but most clients describe it as relieving and surprisingly relaxing, with a noticeable release of tightness.
-
No, you do not have to get intraoral massage during your TMJ treatment. It is always your choice, and we can focus on external jaw, neck, and shoulder work if you prefer. We will discuss what feels best for your comfort and goals.
-
Many clients notice relief immediately after TMJ massage, including easier jaw movement and reduced tension. For chronic issues, it may take a few sessions to see lasting changes as your muscles and nervous system adjust to the release.
